On May 8, 2009, Bethany Care Society will officially begin
construction of CollegeSide Gardens, a 103-suite Supportive Living project in Red
Deer. As part of the Construction Launch, Hon. Mary Anne Jablonski, Minister,
Seniors and Community Supports, will present a cheque for $4,260,000 to Bethany
Care Society for funding through the Alberta Supportive Living Initiative (ASLI).
“CollegeSide Gardens, will help address some of the growing need for housing for
seniors and persons with disabilities in the Red Deer area,” said Greer Black,
President and CEO, Bethany Care Society. “This project is being built adjacent to the
existing Bethany CollegeSide long term care centre, located on the grounds of Red
Deer College.”
The three-storey, 75,600 square foot building has been designed with common areas
and features that will allow individuals to maintain their independence as long as
possible. “The proximity to the existing care centre will provide residents access to
enhanced services and opportunities that would not be available in other standalone
housing projects,” said Black. “Residents will also have unique opportunities to
participate in a wide range of programs, events and amenities offered through Red
Deer College.”
“As part of the province’s Continuing Care Strategy to help Albertans age in the right
place we are proud to support this project,” said Mary Anne Jablonski, Minister of
Seniors and Community Supports. “Projects like this can make a big difference in the
lives of many seniors and persons with disabilities by increasing their options to
continue living in their communities when they can no longer live independently due
to increased personal care needs.”
Alberta Seniors and Community Supports, through ASLI, is funding the 72
affordable studio suites. Bethany Care Society is also building 25 one-bedroom and
six two-bedroom suites, for a total of 103 suites of supportive living accommodation.
CollegeSide Gardens builds on a partnership between Bethany Care Society, Red
Deer College and Alberta Health Services (Red Deer Zone). Construction is expected
to be completed in the summer of 2010.
