For some time, Bethany Sylvan Lake has been looking at ways to improve the crowded conditions in the top floor dining room. The goals are to:
· Create more open space,
· Enhance the dining experience for the 22 residents of supportive living,
· Improve access to tables for staff serving meals and for residents who may need additional space for wheelchairs or walkers, and
· Increase comfort in the living environment for residents, families and visitors.
The cost estimate to renovate and expand the dining room is $180,000. Alberta Health and Wellness provides care funding for long term care and some staffing costs for residents in supportive living. This funding does not include an allowance to renovate or upgrade the building, so Bethany is looking to other sources.
“Bethany recognizes the concerns of residents and staff and we are committed to making the necessary improvements to the dining room,” said Val Trotter, Administrator. “We have completed the initial design work and the timing of construction will depend on many factors, including availability of government grants and fundraising,” she added.
“We are grateful to be in a community that has strongly supported seniors’ care and Bethany Sylvan Lake for many years,” said Shirley Philips, Executive Director, Bethany Care Foundation. She notes that the fundraising target for this project is $45,000, with approximately $11,000 already raised through current community fundraising for Bethany Sylvan Lake. “In the coming weeks, we will be approaching service clubs, businesses and individuals in the community to provide an opportunity to donate to this very worthy cause which will greatly improve quality of life for the seniors.”
