Greer Black, President and CEO of Bethany Care Society, welcomes the announcement by federal and provincial cabinet ministers of $5.8 million in funding under the Affordable Housing Program. The funding will support development of the first phase of an affordable housing project that will expand the capacity of Bethany’s Riverview Village community.
“We are excited to launch this important seniors’ housing project,” says Black. “Phase one of the project will support the construction of much-needed affordable housing units, including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites.”
Riverview Village is located on a 12.5-acre site in the southeast Calgary community of Dover. The park-like setting includes two apartment buildings with 218 suites of affordable rental accommodation for seniors, as well as three apartment blocks with 51 suites of affordable housing for working adults and families.
“Our vision for Riverview Village is to create an integrated aging-in-place community, with independent living, various levels of supportive living and potentially even long term care,” says Black. “This location is ideal, as it is close to the heart of the city, within an existing mature residential community.”
A faith-based organization founded in 1945, Bethany Care Society is one of Western Canada’s largest voluntary, not-for-profit providers of health, housing and community services for seniors and persons with disabilities. The range of Bethany’s operations includes six care centres offering long term care and supportive living; independent seniors’ housing with affordable rental and life lease suites; and community services including Bethany Lifeline and Adult Day Support Programs. In total, Bethany provides care and service to more than 4,900 Albertans in over 100 communities.
