From the President and CEO

Like many Canadians, you have probably made a commitment that in 2012, you are going to do something to better yourself. Generally speaking, we are good at honouring commitments when they are made to others. But, we often forget to honour the commitments we have made to ourselves.

A few short months ago, I had the pleasure to meet Kevin Papke who made a commitment to himself in 2012. Kevin came to Bethany and said, “This year I am going to climb 50 mountains and in the process, I am going to raise $100,000; I want that money to go to Bethany to support programs in dementia care.” We got Kevin a comfortable chair and then we scoped out a plan.

Kevin’s father had dementia, and he admits it was painful to watch his father forget the people and the activities he once loved so much. So Kevin made a commitment to help other families living with dementia. Climbing to the top of 50 mountain peaks is a lofty goal for most of us, but I know Kevin has prepared himself mentally and physically for this challenge. And, I know that Kevin will honour his commitment to this challenge.

We are calling this fundraiser, Summits for Seniors, and I hope that over the next year, you will support, follow and cheer for Kevin as he works to fulfill his commitment for 2012. You can learn more about this initiative by following the links on the first page of this newsletter.
