Time Commitment
The Pastoral Care Visitor requires a minimum one year commitment. Time of day will be coordinated with both the volunteer and resident and visits can vary from five minutes to one hour.
 
Position Summary
The Pastoral Care Visitor provides one-on-one pastoral presence and explores Spiritual meaning in resident’s lives. As a Pastoral Care Visitor you will have an opportunity to grow your own spirituality by learning from those who have lifeling experiences. You will also build relationships with residents and be rewarded by knowing that you have enhanced the resident’s quality of life.
 
Reporting to the Coordinator, Volunteer Services and working with a Chaplain from the Pastoral Care department, your specific duties will include: 
 
- Exercising active listening and open ended questions that elicit resident’s story and journey
- If appropriate, reading scripture, praying with resident and offering short devotion
- Recording visits with the Pastoral Care department
- Communicating resident’s pastoral care issues to the Chaplain if appropriate
 
Qualifications
New volunteers will participate in general volunteer orientation. Volunteers will participate in Bethany Care Society’s four week Pastoral Care Volunteer Training Course, equivalent or be willing to participate in training and learning experience. As a Pastoral Care Visitor you:
- Are 18 years or older
- Have experience and/or are an active participant in a chosen faith community
- Are compassionate and empathetic
- Are respectful of others’ physical, mental, emotional and spiritual life
- Show respect for Ecumenical and Interfaith realities
- Have good listening skills
